INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

Offered individually, people attend with a specific concern  or area in their life they would like assistance with. The treatment of this concern is the focus of the sessions, with a therapeutic plan negotiated during the first session.  Although some concerns can be addressed in 2 -3 sessions, treatment is usually in 6 session blocks with a review at the end of each block. Most people need 12 – 18 sessions of therapy to get lasting results.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN

WHAT PARENTS CAN EXPECT

Sessions are 50-55 minutes long.

When working with children under 15 (or under 20 if they have developmental delays)  a session with the parents/carers without the child  occurs before meeting with the child.  This session covers information about the child and the difficulties they are facing, and includes information gathering about history, family functioning and other factors contributing to the child’s emotions and behaviours.

Following  the initial session, sessions with children include a short check-in with parents/carers at the beginning of the session, but the majority of the session is spent with the child alone.

When working with children, additional sessions are also required through-out the therapy process focussing on skills training for parents/carers in behaviour management and emotion regulation.  In addition, at times home visits or school visits are necessary to observe the child in that environment.

Group parenting information  sessions are held in the evenings periodically throughout the year.
